Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ Google, through its philanthropic arm, has unveiled a substantial grant of N1.2 billion to support the “Mind the Gap” initiative. This ambitious project aims to empower 20,000 Nigerian women and youth with essential digital skills, aligning with the Federal Government’s ambitious goal of generating one million digital jobs.

The program is designed to provide comprehensive training in a range of critical areas, including data science, artificial intelligence, web development, and mobile app development. The training will be delivered through a combination of online and in-person methods, ensuring accessibility to participants from all corners of Nigeria.

Google’s initiative consists of three distinct components. The “Digital Onboarders Program” aims to equip 5,000 young individuals who are either employed, in education, or undergoing training with the necessary digital skills. These newly acquired skills will then be integrated into consumer-centric businesses across 12 states within the country.

The “Arewa Tech4Ladies” program specifically targets women in four semi-urban and rural communities in Kaduna State. This endeavor plans to train 5,000 women and girls in areas like data science and artificial intelligence, ultimately enabling them to participate actively in the digital landscape.

The final pillar of Google’s initiative is the “Engage Nigeria” project, which centers on offering training and mentorship to 10,000 exceptionally talented young individuals across the nation. This effort is particularly aimed at supporting the burgeoning creative industry in Nigeria.

Vice President Kashim Shettima welcomed this initiative, highlighting the importance of innovative approaches to creating job opportunities. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to turning ambitious plans into concrete actions, ensuring that Nigeria remains open for business and that its youth are well-prepared to contribute to a thriving digital economy.

In essence, Google’s N1.2 billion grant is set to play a pivotal role in equipping Nigerian women and youth with essential digital skills, in line with the country’s aspirations for widespread digital literacy and job creation.
