Britain (Commonwealth)_Attention young bookworms and their families! The summer season has arrived, and libraries across the county have launched their exciting Summer Reading Programs. These programs are designed to keep young readers engaged and motivated to continue their reading adventures while school is out. The Roseburg Public Library, in particular, hosted a fantastic kick-off event on Tuesday afternoon, attracting over a dozen kids eager to participate in the summer reading program. The library’s goal is simple but powerful: to encourage kids to immerse themselves in the joy of reading throughout the sunny summer months.

During the kick-off event, kids and their families were treated to a variety of fun activities. From coloring and creating bookmarks to making ice cream and unleashing their creativity through painting, the event buzzed with excitement and creativity. Each child received a special reading log to track their reading progress over the summer, with the challenge of completing several hours of reading.

“Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp explained, “Kids have three logs to read a total of 21 hours. If they complete that, then they get put into a drawing. The grand prize drawing offers a chance to win four family memberships to Wildlife Safari.”

The prospect of winning such an incredible prize sparked enthusiasm among the young readers. Eight-year-old Fay Frich, for example, expressed her determination to read at least ten books this summer, starting with the first book in the beloved Harry Potter series. She shared her love for graphic novels like “Big Nate” and “Dog Man and Cat Kid,” but also revealed her intention to explore more novels this summer. Fay’s excitement was contagious as she talked about her love for fantasy novels, while nine-year-old Addison Olson leaned towards comedy and mystery-themed novels. Addison’s favorite book, “No Talking” by Andrew Clements, showcased her diverse taste in literature.

Apart from the joy of reading, the Roseburg Public Library has an array of thrilling events lined up for the summer. One of the most anticipated is the Harry Potter Day event on July 29, where young readers are invited to dress up as their favorite characters from the enchanting series.

If you missed the kick-off event, don’t worry! Reading logs are available both at the library and on the Roseburg Public Library website. Remember, the deadline to turn in your reading logs and enter the raffle for the grand prize is Saturday, August 26.

But the Roseburg Public Library isn’t the only one hosting exciting summer events. Other libraries across the counties have planned a wide range of activities, including craft days, movie nights, and presentations by local artists and organizations. Each library has a detailed list of events available, so make sure to explore the offerings at your local library.

Let’s make this summer a season of exploration, imagination, and discovery through the pages of captivating books. Join your local library’s Summer Reading Program and embark on a journey that will expand your horizons, transport you to new worlds, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
