InfraBuild Sets New Standard for Steel Traceability

InfraBuild, a leading steel manufacturer and distributor, has set a significant benchmark by becoming the first distribution business in Australia to achieve accreditation under the Australian Steel Institute’s (ASI) traceability standard. Steel Compliance Australia awarded InfraBuild Steel Centre Dandenong this milestone under the AS/NZS 5131 standard, which serves as a critical framework for ensuring traceability in steel products across supply chains.

The ASI updated its standards to incorporate traceability measures as a response to growing industry concerns in the context of today’s “open borders” market. These amendments address pressing questions regarding the origins of steel products and their adherence to correct processing protocols, thereby reinforcing transparency and quality within the industry. The traceability certification is increasingly sought by both public organizations and government entities, which are either actively pursuing or mandating this standard for steel procurement.

InfraBuild’s CEO, Francisco Irazusta, emphasized that the traceability standard not only enhances industry confidence but also has the potential to save customers considerable time and resources in verifying product compliance. By implementing rigorous quality management systems, InfraBuild demonstrates its commitment to providing high-quality products that meet market expectations for integrity and reliability.

“InfraBuild Steel Centre Dandenong established a comprehensive quality management system with 17 distinct steps to secure accreditation under this standard,” Irazusta remarked. “This rigorous approach provides our customers with assurance about the quality of our products in a market that increasingly values integrity and accountability.”

InfraBuild’s pursuit of traceability is part of its broader commitment to sustainable practices within the steel industry. Dedicated to sustainable operations, InfraBuild, the only fully vertically integrated, electric arc furnace-based steel manufacturer in Australia, strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. InfraBuild’s current production lineup, which includes the innovative SENSE 600 range, reflects this commitment. This new steel product line offers up to a 39% reduction in embodied carbon compared to InfraBuild’s traditional 500N grade reinforcing steel, aligning with the growing market demand for eco-friendly building materials.

In line with its traceability goals, InfraBuild plans to extend the ASI certification to all its distribution hubs across Australia. We designed this strategic move to further support downstream businesses and fabricators, enabling them to meet stringent quality and traceability standards in their own operations.

InfraBuild’s extensive national operations comprise 26 scrap metal sites, two electric arc furnaces, eight steel manufacturing mills, and over 100 retail and processing locations. By integrating sustainability and traceability within its network, InfraBuild is positioning itself as an industry leader committed to quality assurance and environmental responsibility, setting a new standard for Australia’s steel industry.

Through its proactive measures and ambitious goals, InfraBuild not only meets current market needs but also prepares for the evolving demands of future customers, government policies, and global sustainability targets.
