Katz stated that failure to comply would result in “total destruction and devastation”. As of now, Hamas is believed to be holding 59 hostages, with 24 confirmed to be alive.
The ceasefire agreement that began in January initially led to a withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Netzarim Corridor. However, recent military action has reversed this, with Israeli forces now reasserting control over the area. The escalation follows stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas, as both sides failed to agree on a path forward. Hamas has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately undermining the truce, while Israel claims that Hamas rejected multiple offers to extend the ceasefire.
The United Nations (UN) reported that one of its staff members was killed and several others were injured after an explosion struck a UN compound in Deir al-Balah. The IDF has denied responsibility, asserting that no airstrike took place in the area at that time.
The resumption of hostilities has led to a significant increase in casualties. The Hamas-run health ministry claimed that over 400 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday alone.
In response to the renewed war, protests have erupted in Jerusalem, with demonstrators criticizing Netanyahu for his handling of the conflict. The protests escalated into clashes with police, leading to multiple arrests. Critics accuse Netanyahu of using the conflict to maintain his political position amid growing domestic opposition.
