A landmark trade delegation to Papua New Guinea, spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica, has culminated in the identification of pivotal strategies designed to augment collaborative efforts across crucial sectors, including agriculture and tourism. The recently concluded business mission has demonstrably fortified bilateral economic and technical partnerships with Papua New Guinea, a development poised to significantly contribute to Fiji’s overall economic expansion.

The Fiji High Commission in Port Moresby, under the leadership of High Commissioner Jackson Evans, played a vital role in facilitating this instrumental endeavor. The initiative sought to cultivate robust networking connections and elevate commercial relations between the two Pacific Island nations. The re-establishment of the High Commission in 2023 has unlocked a plethora of avenues for the advancement of economic interactions and the deepening of cultural and regional cooperation with Papua New Guinea.

Officials from both nations engaged in extensive dialogues, focusing on the potential for mutual growth and development. The discussions highlighted the strategic importance of strengthening trade links and exploring avenues for collaborative ventures in various industries. The mission served as a platform for Fijian businesses to explore potential partnerships and investment opportunities within Papua New Guinea, and conversely, for Papua New Guinean entities to identify avenues for collaboration with Fijian counterparts.

The High Commission remains optimistic regarding the ongoing discussions with Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade concerning the Bilateral Framework Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation. This agreement is anticipated to serve as a cornerstone for future collaborations, fostering stronger partnerships in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), health, and medical services.

The potential for cooperation in agriculture was a central theme throughout the mission. Both nations possess rich agricultural resources and stand to benefit from the exchange of expertise, technology, and market access. The nations explored collaborative initiatives in areas such as sustainable farming practices, value-added agricultural products, and food security.

Similarly, the tourism sector presents significant opportunities for mutual growth. By leveraging their respective strengths and natural attractions, Fiji and Papua New Guinea can attract a wider range of international tourists and enhance their regional tourism offerings. Discussions centered on joint marketing initiatives, tourism infrastructure development, and the promotion of cultural exchange.

The mission also underscored the importance of leveraging ICT to drive economic development and enhance connectivity between the two nations. Cooperation in areas such as digital infrastructure, e-commerce, and digital literacy was identified as crucial for fostering innovation and economic growth.

Recognizing the significance of healthcare and medical services, the delegation explored avenues for collaboration in areas such as medical training, pharmaceutical supply chains, and public health initiatives. Strengthening cooperation in these sectors will contribute to improving the well-being of citizens in both countries.

High Commissioner Evans conveyed his sincere appreciation to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions to the success of the business mission. He emphasized the importance of sustained engagement and collaboration in realizing the full potential of the bilateral relationship. The successful completion of this trade mission marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to deepen economic and strategic ties between Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The outcomes of this initiative are expected to generate long-term benefits for both nations, fostering prosperity and strengthening regional cooperation within the Pacific. The commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration underscores the shared vision of a prosperous and interconnected Pacific region.
