India’s Bold Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

India (Commonwealth Union)_ India has made a crucial step toward hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad nominated as the primary location. Accordingly, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is set to accept the candidacy officially at its Special General Meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday. This approach is part of a larger campaign to build support for India’s goal of hosting the Olympic Games in 2036. With Canada recently dropping out of the race, India has become a strong contender for the Commonwealth Games in 2030.

A formal Expression of Interest (EoI) to host the Games has already been submitted, and Ahmedabad has been identified as the potential host city. However, India still needs to submit its final proposal by the August 31 deadline set by Commonwealth Sport, the global body responsible for the event. Last week, a high-level delegation from Commonwealth Sport visited Gujarat as part of the evaluation process. The group, led by Darren Hall, Director of Games and Assurance, met with Gujarat’s sports minister Harsh Sanghavi and other top officials. The team spent three days in the state, inspecting proposed venues and assessing infrastructure readiness. “Had a meaningful discussion with Darren Hall and other senior officials on the future of the Commonwealth Games and India’s potential role,” Sanghavi wrote on social media after the meeting. He added that the talks focused on areas like collaboration, innovation, and deepening international sporting ties.

India’s bid comes at a time when interest in hosting the 2030 edition has narrowed. Canada’s exit has left India, Nigeria, and a few other nations as the main contenders. The final decision on who will host the Games is expected in late November at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, Scotland. Lt. Gen. Harpal Singh (Retd), a senior member of the IOA and part of the Commonwealth Sport’s sports committee, expressed optimism. “We’re hopeful. India has a strong case in terms of infrastructure, regional support, and a vision aligned with the future of global sports,” he said.

One of the key shifts in the 2030 bid is the introduction of a multi-city hosting model. Under this approach, several cities within Gujarat could share responsibilities for staging the events. This model, referred to as the ‘host collaborative agreement,’ replaces the older system where a single city would host the entire Games. IOA officials expect this flexible approach to enhance sustainability, disperse economic benefits, and alleviate the burden on a single city. If India wins the bid, several popular sports could return to the Commonwealth Games program, including shooting, wrestling, women’s cricket, archery, table tennis, and squash. These sports have a strong fan base in India and could boost public interest and viewership.

Officials involved in the process say that the central and state governments are working closely with the IOA and Commonwealth Sport to finalize the proposal. The government has already given its approval in principle, allowing the bidding process to move forward. “This is a consultative process. We’re in constant touch with the Commonwealth Sport leadership. The bid is ready, and we’re on track to submit all documents before the deadline,” said an IOA spokesperson.

India hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi. While the event was renowned for its size, it also drew criticism for organizational flaws and corruption claims. This time, Indian officials are aiming to conduct a more transparent and globally recognized event, with a strong emphasis on legacy and long-term effect. The IOA’s formal bid proposal, which has the potential to bring one of the world’s largest athletic events back to India, is the focus of attention as the deadline approaches and international attention shifts to India’s preparations.
