Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on Sunday in what authorities are treating as an apparent homicide, law enforcement confirmed.
The 78-year-old actor, director, and activist and his 68-year-old wife were discovered by first responders inside their residence after the Los Angeles Fire Department was called around 3:30 p.m. Sunday for a medical aid report. Emergency crews found both individuals deceased with wounds consistent with knife trauma.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has confirmed the cause of the deaths to be homicide and has deployed its Robbery-Homicide division to investigate the circumstances surrounding the two deaths. Detectives are carrying out interviews with family members and are actively gathering evidence. However, no suspects have been publicly identified or taken into custody as of yet.
LAPD officials have indicated that the investigation remains in its early stages. A spokesperson stated that detectives are seeking additional warrants and following leads both inside and outside the home but declined to comment on motive or potential individuals of interest.
A family spokesperson issued a statement on Sunday evening expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss and asked for privacy during “an incredibly difficult time.”
Locals and public figures have also weighed in. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the situation a devastating loss,” noting Reiner’s influence on culture and society. California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Reiner’s contributions to film and activism, saying his “boundless empathy makes his stories timeless.”
Rob Reiner was a major figure in the Hollywood entertainment game and had an impressive career that spanned over five decades. He rose to fame through the 1970s sitcom All in the Family, as Michael “Meathead” Stivic.
Trading places from in front of the camera to behind it, Reiner soon became a celebrated director with a series of beloved films in his portfolio, including When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap, and A Few Good Men.
His work ended up influencing multiple generations of filmmakers, with a significant number of his films being put down as classics of American cinema.
His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was a respected photographer and film producer who collaborated with her husband on several projects. Her credits included producing work tied to Reiner’s later films and documentary features.
The couple married in 1989 after meeting on the set of When Harry Met Sally… and shared a life rooted in creative collaboration and family.
Specialized detectives with the LAPD’s homicide unit continue to comb the scene for clues. Authorities have not yet disclosed any details about a possible motive or whether additional arrests may be forthcoming.
