During 2025, U.S. tourism experienced a significant blow. It comes from Caribbean nations such as Jamaica, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and others. The Caribbean contributed to a decline in U.S. tourism, specifically in Las Vegas, Nevada. Las Vegas experienced a decline of more than 7% in tourist arrivals.

Several factors contributed to the decline. It included rising travel costs, besides competing destinations offering similar experiences. Changing travel patterns also reflected the influence of the current global economic situation. Caribbean countries have long been popular destinations for U.S. tourists. This is particularly so for those originating from both Latin America and Canada. The shift in tourist preferences and trends has led travellers to opt for closer proximity and more affordable alternatives. Caribbean nations tend to experience challenges in sustaining their appeal in the competitive tourism market. As such, it may be appropriate for U.S. tourism authorities to address the underlying issues and accordingly adapt to the evolving trends.

This article attempts to clarify how these Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, the Bahamas and many others, have contributed to this decline in U.S. tourism. Additionally, this article will analyse the implications for the future of Nevada’s tourism industry.

As a Caribbean gem, Jamaica is renowned for its stunning beaches and its unique and vibrant culture. However, Jamaica also experienced a significant 21.2% drop in Canadian tourist arrivals during the year of 2025. Analysis of the supporting figures shows the number of visitors declined by 310 (28%) from a previous 1,461 to 1,151. This significant 28% decline signalled a shift in travel patterns. Jamaica has long been a favourite destination among Canadians seeking warmer tropical escapes, besides experiences. Many people believe that the increasing popularity of alternative destinations could have contributed to this decline. Besides, Jamaica also faced stiff competition from nearby islands that offered similar attractions & experiences. Competitive alternative locations often offered more affordable prices. The global economic climate today moves with higher travel expenses and concerns over safety and health. This trend may have played an influential role in fewer Canadians choosing Jamaica for their vacations. Despite this downturn, Jamaica remains a popular Canadian choice as a destination preference. This preference may be attributed to Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage. Also, to reggae music and world-class resorts.
