Vanuatu Trembles Again: Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Isangel

ISANGEL, Vanuatu, August 20, 2026 — The earth shook beneath the South Pacific once again on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with a magnitude of 5.0 to 5.2 earthquake hitting near Isangel in Vanuatu’s Tafea Province – a reminder of the restless tectonic forces that make this island nation one of the most exciting and one of the most seismically active areas in the world.

According to Volcano Discovery, the earthquake occurred 57 kilometres southeast of Isangel, the capital of Tafea Province on Tanna Island. The earthquake was recorded several minutes after it happened, with seismologists monitoring it.

A magnitude of 5.2 is usually classified as a moderate quake but strongly depends on its depth, distance from populated areas and ground conditions. Even smaller earthquakes like that can cause visible shaking, especially when they occur close to populated areas.

The recent earthquake is a further reminder of the location of Vanuatu, which is within the Pacific Ring of Fire, the vast area around the Pacific Ocean that experiences tectonic movements as well as earthquakes and volcano eruptions. The island of Tanna is also prone to earthquakes, making monitoring of such factors important to its population.

On August 16, 2026, a deep, magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Reported by the USGS at a depth of 188 km and centred 56 km northeast of Port Olry, the intermediate-depth tremor caused no immediate damage or tsunami warnings.

The earthquake that occurred on August 20 should not be taken as an indication that another big earthquake is just about to strike. Sims stress that the fault lines are moving all the time; thus, it is difficult to say how this will affect the next tremors.

In the case of Tafea, on the contrary, it is really good to see that the earth has been quite active in producing quakes, one by one helping scientists learn the processes taking place in this part of the globe.
