The Republic of Cyprus is experiencing an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, so it defers clearance of the following import commodities that have already arrived or are yet to be imported.
Live (including non-domestic) ruminant & porcine animals. This includes wild game. Also, their germplasm
Fresh meat from ruminant animals, besides porcine animals (includes chilled & frozen)
Meat products sourced from ruminant & porcine animals, especially if they have not been subject to prescribed heat treatment B, C, D, or D1 as defined in a separate guideline (including wild game)
Milk, colostrum, & also their products, unless subjected to treatment as defined in Article 4 of Regulation 2010/605 (as in a separate guideline)
Certain animal by-products (a full list of this category is disclosed in a separate guideline)
Casings obtained from FMD-susceptible species

The outbreak of FMD was detected in a cattle farm in Livadia, Larnaca.
The UK office for SPS Trade Assurance will implement restrictions against commercial imports of the same above-listed commodities from Cyprus.
A separate OVS note is expected to be issued when these restrictions are implemented. The UK office will hold any consignments of the aforementioned commodities from Cyprus during this period.
For clarity, Annex 1 sets out the specific guidelines on risk-mitigating treatments that are acceptable for imports of meat & dairy products from Cyprus.
FMD-susceptible animals under the Foot & Mouth Disease (England) Order 2006 means a cow, bull, sheep, goat, deer, camel, llama, alpaca, guanaco, vicuna, or any other ruminant; any swine (that is a member of the suborder Suina of the order Artiodactyla); an elephant; or a rodent (other than a pet rodent).
Guideline
Meat products intended for human consumption—acceptable risk-mitigating treatments (annex 2 part 4 of Assimilated Decision 2007/777)
- Treatment in a hermetically sealed container to an Fo value of 3 or more.
- A minimum temperature of 80°C. This should be reached throughout the meat and stomachs, bladders & intestines during the processing of the meat product & treated stomachs, bladders, and intestines.
