India (Commonwealth Union)_ Vikram K Doraiswami has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to China, a move that comes at a time when both countries are working to stabilize and gradually improve their strained relationship. Accordingly, he will be taking up his new post in Beijing very soon. A career diplomat, Doraiswami has been with the Indian Foreign Service since 1992. Early in his career, Doraiswami underwent training in New Delhi before being posted to Hong Kong in 1994 as a Third Secretary. During his time there, he studied the Chinese language, an effort that would later prove valuable. In 1996, he relocated to Beijing and spent over four years at the Indian Embassy, gaining personal knowledge of China’s political and diplomatic landscape. When he returned to New Delhi in 2000, he became the Deputy Chief of Protocol, in charge of important ceremonies and state engagements. He later joined the Prime Minister’s Office, where he served as the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary. His career continued to expand internationally when he was posted to India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as political counsellor.

He speaks Chinese, French, and some Korean. His wife, Sangeeta, works in the education sector, and they have a son.

In a diplomatic move, China has welcomed Vikram’s appointment. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said envoys play a vital role in strengthening ties and expressed hope that Doraiswami would contribute positively to bilateral relations. His posting comes as India and China take cautious steps to restore normal engagement, including resuming flights and easing visa restrictions. His experience and familiarity with China are expected to help manage complex issues while exploring areas of cooperation between the two countries.
