Shubman Gill‘s performance on the second night of IPL 2023 in New Delhi contained everything the T20 league is known for: a captain’s 50 runs, ending in a close-run finish with an exciting finish in total, as well as a fine issued within moments of Gujarat Titans finishing that match.
After the Gujarat Titans defeated the Delhi Capitals by one run in a controversial match held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, April 8th, the Indian Premier League (IPL) established that Gill was fined for having his team not adhere to the time limits for completing their six overs of play. Because it was their first offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, per their penalty schedule, Gill’s fine amounted to INR 12,000, which converts to nearly $12,968 USD at the average daily exchange rate established by Xe on April 9, 2026.
The penalty was substantive, yet it was only the latest chapter of an overall tightly contested game. The margin between both teams continues to get larger as the season advances, but there is diminishing enforcement as teams continue to exceed allowed amounts of time to complete their six overs. Penalisation through the IPL CoC (Indian Premier League Code of Conduct) results in escalating suspensions to teams for these types of violations. For a first occurrence, the captain is the only player fined, and with each repetition of similar violations during the same season, the captain will receive additional fines, and the balance of his players will begin to receive financial penalties based upon their participation in the infraction(s).
Gill’s impact on the match was evident from the moment he stepped out in the middle. In his first innings, Gill contributed 70 runs from 45 balls (including 4 fours and 5 sixes), and he scored 50 of those runs after just 33 balls, helping to set the Gujarat Titans to a total of 211 in their innings, which created a situation where composure would be more influential than power when they ultimately came to bat.
This match turned into a test of nerves. At 13 runs to win with just one ball to go, Delhi Capitals remained in the match until the last over of the final delivery, where Prasidh Krishna saved 13 runs on the last delivery to secure Gujarat Titans a one-run victory. The defining moment of the game for the Delhi Capitals was the run out of Kuldeep Yadav at the striker’s end. Right from the start of the innings, David Miller had caused a build-up in potential tension by hesitating between the 5th and 6th deliveries and then missing the last delivery. The IPL presents one of the most unpredictable forms of cricket, where each delivery has the potential to affect the outcome of the match, allowing teams to achieve success at the same rate with just one delivery.
The Gujarat Titans were able to secure a victory yesterday afternoon, marking their first success of the new season. The timing of this victory was good for GT, as they had a difficult start to the season. Furthermore, the win has shown that Gill is being evaluated on two levels: His batting has continued to provide stability for GT’s top order, and Gil’s captaincy is now adding the added demand for him to keep the innings moving forward at the required tempo. Following the penalty imposed on Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer earlier in Season 2, Gill became the second captain to be fined this year.
The lesson learned by GT is clear. In this tournament, where margins are extremely close, controlling the clock can be just as vital as having control of the scoreboard. The Titans will be back in action on Sunday, April 12, against the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow, and they will be hoping that their performance and score result in more attention being paid to runs and results rather than to what the match referee’s records show.
