India (Commonwealth Union)_ Actor-turned-politician Vijay has achieved a remarkable feat in the current Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. His political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the leading political force in the state, winning 108 seats out of the 234-member Assembly. Though just short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority, the scale of the victory has placed Vijay firmly at the center of power and influence.
This victory is particularly significant because TVK chose to contest alone without aligning with the traditional major players. In an age where coalition politics is the norm in the state, the move was seen as a risky strategy. Yet the results suggest that Vijay’s personal charisma, combined with a successful ground-level campaign, resonated with voters across different regions. Accordingly, TVK leads with 108 seats, followed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) with 59 seats, and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) securing 47 seats. Smaller parties have only a limited presence in the Assembly, with the Indian National Congress winning 5 seats and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) taking 4. A handful of other regional and left parties have also managed to win a small number of constituencies. Despite falling short of the majority mark, TVK’s lead over its nearest rivals is significant.
The party has performed well in the urban areas and made significant inroads into areas traditionally held by its rivals. Chennai, which has been a DMK stronghold, saw a major shift as TVK won the majority of the seats. This has given Vijay a clear edge as the post-poll talks begin on a broad-based support. However, the numbers show that no party can form the government on its own. This has opened the doors for typical hung assembly, where the alliances and talks will play a major role in deciding who will be the leader.

Possible alliance to form a government
With the results now confirmed, attention has quickly shifted to the process of government formation. The single largest party TVK is expected to form the government, but to do so, it needs the support of at least 10 more legislators to cross the majority threshold. Indications are that several smaller parties are open to supporting a TVK-led government. The Congress and PMK are reportedly in discussions with TVK, and both parties are believed to be seeking representation in the cabinet as part of any agreement. Their combined strength could go a long way in bolstering Vijay’s position.
Other parties such as the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi are also weighing their options but have not made any declaration so far. Discussions are still underway internally, and their final decision could play a crucial role in deciding the final outcome. There is also talk of possible divisions within the present alliances, especially those headed by the DMK. Certain parties that were once part of the DMK’s coalition might rethink their stance given the changed political scenario. The Congress, for instance, had explored the possibility of working with Vijay before the elections, suggesting that lines of communication are already open.
However, an alliance with the AIADMK is unlikely due to ideological differences and its current ties with other national players. Vijay has always opposed certain national forces, and hence, such an alliance is politically difficult. If talks succeed, Tamil Nadu could have a coalition government led by TVK, possibly with external support from smaller parties. Another possibility is a minority government, where TVK governs with conditional backing from allies. In either case, the coming days will be critical as political leaders work behind the scenes to secure the numbers needed.
