Over one thousand athletes will compete at the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) 4th Games, starting Saturday, September 13th, in the Al Shaqab stadium located in Doha, Qatar (the city’s historic capital). Each of the six members of the GCC is being represented, with athletes from Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates participating in these games. All athletes aim to win medals, but they can also show how hard they’ve worked for years. Expected outcomes from this experience include fostering constructive relationships and unity among the Gulf Cooperative Council member countries based on each member country’s shared value of pursuing common goals with determination.

Many local and regional dignitaries attended the opening ceremony highlighting various activities, including but not limited to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, one of Qatar’s founding members of the Qatar Sport Authority who has played a vital role in hosting numerous sporting events in Qatar and has been a leader in bringing countries/Gulf nations together through sport.

Sheikh Joaan passionately articulated how sport has the power to unite individuals and strengthen communities, especially during these challenging global economic times when nations face significant uncertainties and many are reluctant to offer assistance to one another.

During this period (May 11th to 22nd) there will be 19 separate sporting events taking place at the games, including track and field, swimming, basketball, and volleyball, giving young people from the Gulf States a chance as athletes to showcase their abilities. In addition to providing youth with a platform to compete as athletes, the games also will affect many other areas.

The GCC Games represent a chance for Qatar – which has a long-term objective of becoming an international leader in the sport by hosting major sporting competitions like the recently completed FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the soon-to-be-held 2030 Asian Games – to consolidate itself within the international sporting community.

The young male and female athletes from the different national teams on the entire medal podium show that they can compete with each other while treating each other with respect, even though they are considered individual competitors.

The strong message coming out of Doha this week is that the Gulf region will continue to play together as a community, as they will continue to develop as a unified community.
