Burna Boy, Shakira and Africa’s Global Impact on 2026 World Cup Anthem

Burna Boy, a Nigerian superstar, has once again, without fail, placed Africa at the centre of the global stage after joining icon Shakira to sing the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is titled “Dai Dai”. FIFA, announcing this song, has left the song blending Afrobeats and Latin rhythms in an honour of celebrating football, culture and unity ahead of the tournament which is scheduled to start in June 2026.

Burna Boy’s involvement in the event carries a high significance for many Africans. The artist, whose origins are rooted in Nigeria, which is one of the most influential member states that acts as a representative of the Commonwealth, is just an example of how the country has become a cultural powerhouse through its Afrobeats industry, which is highly successful globally. Nigeria, a member of the Commonwealth of Nations since the year of 1960, is proud that Burna Boy sets an example of how emerging talent is increasing in the region to the point that there are now recognisable international figures being birthed from its roots.

His inclusion in FIFA’s official anthem shows a key point on how Africa’s growing influence is not only in sports such as football but also in entertainment that is interconnected with sports. The continent has made sure to maintain a strong relationship with FIFA tournaments for a long time, especially after South Africa, another Commonwealth region, became the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup back in 2010. That tournament remains historic for many football fans, as it was also strongly associated with Shakira’s anthem “Waka Waka” (This Time for Africa), which celebrated African culture and featured South African influences. The song blew out charts, remaining still as a crowd favourite as it reshaped the entertainment sector regarding FIFA.

Several African Commonwealth nations continue to play major roles within international football. Countries such as Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya and South Africa, who are also a part of the Commonwealth, remain deeply involved in FIFA competitions through various ways such as qualification campaigns, youth tournaments, and football development partnerships. Morocco, although not an example for a Commonwealth country, has also made history by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in the year of 2022, which further elevates Africa’s presence in football globally.

Canada, jointly hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Mexico and the United States, marks the first tournament hosted by three nations.

With Burna Boy now leading one of FIFA’s biggest musical moments, many observers view the anthem as another sign that African culture, particularly from Commonwealth nations like Nigeria, continues to shape the global entertainment and sporting landscape.
