U.S.-Canada Tensions Rise as US Links Canadian Wildfire Smoke to New Tariff Threats

U.S. President Donald Trump says that the cost of pollution from wildfire smoke drifting south of the border must be added to the tariffs imposed on Canadian goods.

The U.S. is holding Canada responsible for poor forest maintenance. As such, the U.S. As a result, filth and pollution, along with unhealthy air, are unnecessarily invading the U.S. ‘It’s dangerously low quality, so totally unacceptable,’ wrote the president on Friday, 17 July ’29, on Truth Social.

Trump went on to add that this was wilful negligence. It was becoming an annual occurrence. It was also costing the U.S. billions of dollars. The cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the tariffs Canada’s presently paying.

Trump is the latest U.S. politician to criticise Canada for its handling of wildfires. Earlier in the week commencing Monday, 13 July ’26, a handful of Michigan State representatives claimed that Canada hasn’t done much to address the smoke. It has led to deteriorating air conditions in northern U.S. states.

Republican representatives John James, Jack Bergman, and Lisa McClain, besides John Moolenaar, penned a letter on Thursday, 16 July ’26, titled ‘Canada’s Apologies Won’t Clear Michigan’s Skies’.

The U.S. accused Canada of not acting with urgency to address wildfire smoke in recent times. They claimed that nothing has changed except that Michigan’s patience has run out.

James, a candidate for governor of Michigan, took to social media on Thursday, 16 July ’26, to issue a final warning to Canada to better manage the fires. He added that American lungs were paying for Canadian inaction.

James added that sovereignty comes with responsibility. James opined that Canada has not met its responsibility to prevent a foreseeable disaster from crossing into another country’s airspace.

Detroit topped the IQAir global index for poorest air quality in the world on both Thursday, 16 & Friday, 17 July ’26. Toronto held that rank on Wednesday, 15 July 2026.
