On the 22nd of July in 2026, Pakistan advanced on the path towards an important upgrade in its aviation sector, with the planned construction of three separate aviation utilities at Islamabad International Airport. This would immensely enhance Islamabad’s engineering and maintenance capabilities and would allow the country to have better training for pilots. Among the aims of the project is the establishment of Pakistan’s very first MRO center that has been approved by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. This means that the country is trying to develop the aviation industry domestically, contrary to its current dependency on foreign countries.
The MRO center that is expected to be implemented by the company NORTEK will get the required administrative support from the Pakistan Airports Authority, whereas the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority will be providing it with regulatory oversight. After getting the EASA approval, the facility will be capable of offering base maintenance and component support for the airplanes Airbus A318, A319, A320, and A321 that are known to comprise the narrow-body fleet delivered for short- and medium-haul operations. In this context, the project would imply that it would allow for carrying out technical operations on a domestic scale that would lead to quicker turnarounds, less dependence on overseas maintenance facilities, and the creation of high-skilled jobs for people from the region.
The second significant project is the construction of an aircraft maintenance hangar as per the standard set by EASA, undertaken by Airblue. The purpose of the hangar is to provide protection to the aircraft from any external impacts caused due to changing weather conditions. Furthermore, it will provide assistance to the airlines by enhancing their maintenance activities. More importantly, it may open avenues for other airlines whose fleet consists of Airbus A320 family aircraft. Thus, the construction of maintenance infrastructure is important because maintenance capabilities are fundamental to the growth of aviation; when aircraft can be serviced domestically, it increases flexibility and provides greater benefits to passengers.
The airline has taken another action as a part of its strategy. Specifically, Airblue is establishing an aviation training center that will include both a full flight simulator and the classroom facilities to offer type ratings to the pilots, on the one hand. The completion date for the project is set for April 2027, and thus, the establishment is aimed at resolving the trouble of lacking pilots and minimizing the necessity of pilot training in foreign countries. The actions of Airblue have a particular significance, as flight training is both expensive and strictly regulated, which emphasizes the importance of simulator training.
