USA (Commonwealth Union)_ The Indian-American community is playing an increasingly important role in strengthening relations between India and the United States. Its influence goes well beyond business and technology, extending into public life, culture, education, healthcare and community leadership. Accordingly, recent Independence Day celebrations in the New York tristate area offered a clear example of how the diaspora continues to build connections between the two countries. At Veterans Memorial Park in Parsippany, New Jersey, Indian-Americans helped set a Guinness World Record by arranging more than 1,300 US flags to form the number “250.”

The display, organised by the Consulate General of India in New York in partnership with the Federation of Indian Associations, marked India’s 80th Independence Day alongside the United States’ 250th anniversary. The event was more than a record-breaking achievement. It presented the Indian-American community as a bridge between the two nations. Indian and American flags stood together, reflecting the close relationship between the two countries and the growing role of people of Indian origin in American society. The celebrations also brought together political leaders, business representatives and community members.

Officials from New Jersey and New York joined Indian diplomats and diaspora organisations, highlighting the community’s growing presence in public life. Several US jurisdictions, including New York and New Jersey, also recognised August 15 as India Day in appreciation of the contributions made by Indian-Americans. Across the tristate region, Independence Day events featured flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and public gatherings. The Federation of Indian Associations also organised celebrations at Times Square, while the India Day Parade in Manhattan continued the tradition of bringing Indian culture into one of New York’s most prominent public spaces.

The community’s contribution, however, extends far beyond cultural celebrations. Indian-Americans are increasingly visible in technology, medicine, education, science, business and government. Their professional achievements strengthen the American economy while maintaining strong personal and cultural links with India. India’s leadership has also recognised this role. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message marking the celebrations, described the Indian-American community’s connection with India as a source of strength and pointed to shared democratic values between the two countries.
The progress of the Indian diaspora demonstrates how people-to-people ties can support broader diplomatic relations. By succeeding in American society while maintaining links with India, the community creates opportunities for greater cooperation, understanding and exchange. As the US and India continue to deepen their partnership, the Indian-American community is likely to remain an important force in bringing the two nations closer. Its growing influence shows that strong international relationships are built not only by governments, but also by the people who connect them.
