The continuation of these actions resulted in delays being caused and cancellations to be made at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The work slowdown entered its second day on August 31. The work slowdown ended up affecting travelers across one of East Africa‘s most important aviation hubs. Long queues began to form at the airport, and some passengers were even left waiting for much longer periods as the timings of flight departures remained uncertain and unpredictable.
The Kenya Aviation Workers’ Union (KAWU) said several unresolved concerns were the main driver for the action to be taken. According to the union, workers have brought up issues that mainly surround employment practices, compensation, and security in their jobs and proposed changes to the management of the airport. Reports have also noted that there are concerns over a delayed collective bargaining agreement, which involves the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
Another point of disagreement involves plans to use volunteers in certain airport roles. Union representatives have argued that such a move could undermine trained aviation personnel and create further uncertainty for existing employees.
The Kenya Airports Authority acknowledged the fact that the industrial action had affected flight operations, and travelers were advised to confirm their schedules with airlines before travelling to the airport. Kenya Airways and its subsidiary Jambojet experienced long-term delays, while RwandAir, which is Rwanda’s national carrier, cancelled two flights during reports of air traffic control difficulties in Nairobi.
The disruption has highlighted the much larger importance of JKIA, which serves as a key connection point for regional and international travel. Delays at the airport can end up quickly affecting passengers who are travelling across East Africa and beyond, especially those who rely on connecting flights.
Union officials kept talks with government representatives. Their aim and efforts were to settle the dispute, but at first, the discussions failed to produce an agreement. Negotiations were expected to continue as workers maintained pressure for their concerns to be addressed.
The latest disruption also follows a similar labor dispute that took place in the earlier stages of this year. This highlights the continuing tensions between aviation workers and airport authorities. For passengers, however, the immediate concern remained simple: when flights would return to normal.
