Following the shooting of a 12-year-old boy at a home in Sydney last month, authorities have charged a 19-year-old man with murder. The child suffered gunshot wounds to his face and neck and later died in hospital.

The incident occurred on 21 September, when emergency services were called to a unit in north-west Sydney after receiving reports of a shooting. The injured boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Despite medical treatment, he died three days later.

Nine other people were inside the property when the shooting occurred. None of them suffered injuries. Police arrested three men, who were all 18 at the time. Two were subsequently released without charges.

The third man, Isaac Bechara, has since turned 19. He was initially accused of concealing a serious indictable offence and was held in custody. However, police announced on Tuesday that he had now been charged with murder. Investigators initially dismissed the possibility of organised crime involvement. However, officers later began examining potential links to criminal gangs as part of their investigation.

Superintendent Naomi Moore stated last month that New South Wales Police were already familiar with several individuals present at the property. Authorities were considering whether their connections to organised crime were relevant to the shooting.

Moore also revealed that some witnesses were not assisting investigators. Authorities had not yet recovered the gun suspected of being involved in the shooting. According to local media reports quoting police sources, the weapon may have discharged accidentally. However, investigators have yet to determine exactly how the incident occurred.

Following the boy’s death, his father shared a photograph of himself with his son on social media. The accompanying message, reportedly reading “RIP, my baby,” expressed his grief over the loss.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon also acknowledged the tragedy when the child’s death was announced. He said losing a young life in such circumstances was tragic. Police investigations into the shooting are continuing as the case moves forward following the murder charge.
