Sri Lanka (Commonwealth Union)_ Sri Lanka is preparing to enter a new era of travel with the arrival of its first passenger-carrying drone. The aircraft is expected to make its maiden flight over Colombo Port City on October 30 or 31 or in the first week of November, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL). The initiative is an exciting development for the country’s tourism and transport industries. Passenger drones, if successful, could provide visitors and residents with a faster and more convenient way to travel, while creating new tourism and aviation opportunities. The first aircraft, imported from Thailand under the Chinese technology brand EHang, can carry two passengers and fly for about 30 minutes.

Colombo Port City has been selected as the project’s initial operating area. However, the maiden flight will be a trial, not the start of a public passenger service. Commercial operations will depend on safety assessments and regulatory approval. Sri Lanka has become the first country to join EHang’s Global Fast Track Programme, which aims to accelerate the introduction of pilotless electric aircraft in international markets. The CAASL has completed relevant regulatory processes under selected United States certification standards, while local rules for Advanced Air Mobility systems are being finalised. A team of international experts is also expected to visit the country to discuss implementation plans.

Tourism is expected to be a major beneficiary of the project. Possible routes include scenic flights over Sigiriya and Pidurangala, offering travellers a different perspective of these popular attractions. The transfers between Colombo hotels and Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake are also being investigated. Technology could also help with emergency medical transport, maritime logistics and the delivery of essentials to remote communities as well as tourism. It could further enhance Sri Lanka’s tourism experiences with coastal sightseeing and whale-watching excursions. The CAASL is also planning to introduce larger aircraft capable of carrying four to six passengers next year. These could operate as short-distance shuttle services, with flights every 30 minutes over distances of around 20 kilometres.

Passenger drones use electric power and take off and land vertically, similar to helicopters. Pilotless models follow programmed routes under remote supervision and are designed specifically to carry people. A second aircraft shipment is expected on November 28. Discussions are also underway regarding the possibility of attracting manufacturers to establish operations in Sri Lanka. It is a promising project but its success will depend on safety approvals, infrastructure and fares that people can afford. No launch date for the public service or ticket prices have been announced. If implemented successfully, this initiative could strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism appeal, modernise short-distance transport and open a new chapter in the country’s travel industry.
