Mumbai (Commonwealth Union)_ Some birthday celebrations are remembered for grand parties and expensive gifts, while others leave a lasting impact on people’s lives. Accordingly, Nita Ambani chose to mark her 62nd birthday with a meaningful initiative aimed at supporting some of society’s most vulnerable people. As such, she performed the Bhoomi Pujan and groundbreaking ceremony for Nita Mukesh Ambani Anant Ashray, a proposed 100-acre care township in Karjat, Maharashtra. Founded on the values of compassion, dignity and lifelong support, the ambitious project aims to provide a loving home for children without parental care, elderly people and individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. Her daughter, Isha Ambani, joined her at the ceremony, while Mukesh Ambani and other family members were also present.
Through Anant Ashray, Nita Ambani hopes to create much more than an old-age home or an orphanage. The vision is to develop a caring community where people of different ages and needs can live together with dignity, comfort and a sense of belonging. The township is expected to accommodate more than 5,000 people and will be developed in phases, subject to necessary approvals. The proposed township will have eight residential villages, each named after a sacred Indian river. Residents will live in small, family-style homes supported by caregivers and house parents. The facilities will include a hospital, rehabilitation centre, special-needs dental services, epilepsy care, physiotherapy, speech therapy and palliative care.

The project will also feature gardens, farms, playgrounds, workshops, cafés, sports facilities and a temple. An animal companionship farm, developed with expertise from Vantara, is also planned. These facilities are intended to support physical health, emotional wellbeing and social interaction. Importantly, Anant Ashray will extend its services beyond its residents. Around 1,000 people from neighbouring communities are expected to benefit from educational, therapeutic and employment opportunities. Mobile medical clinics and outreach programmes will also help families in nearby districts.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nita Ambani described the initiative as a new journey built on gratitude and blessings. She expressed hope that the township would give families peace of mind about the future care of their loved ones. Her decision to begin such a major welfare project on her birthday adds a special meaning to the occasion. Anant Ashray is more than its scale and its facilities. It is a commitment to people who need the most support but get the least attention. Thus, Nita Ambani’s 62nd birthday will be remembered as not just a personal celebration but the start of an initiative built on kindness, care and human dignity.
