Kabul, Afghanistan (CWBN)_ President Ashraf Ghani, claimed that the Taliban have warped the peace talks in Doha, Qatar, to be founded on the US-Taliban Agreement irrespective of the militant body’s religious inclinations, at a religious ceremony held yesterday (29th October). The comments hit local media headlines despite a report made by New York Times (US) about three days ago, stating that the Afghan Government has failed to compensate victims of the conflict over the ravages of war.

“We are building mosques in the country but the Taliban is destroying mosques and madrassas.” – Ghani

The compensation programme, which is for the most part internationally funded, is equipped to 1,300 USD to the families of those killed in the conflict and 650 USD for those wounded. Although these amounts seem insignificant, they are the “one of the few types of justice an Afghan household might hope for”. However, owing to a lack of knowledge among locals on how to press their claims for compensation, many victims and their families go uncompensated.

Allegations have been levelled by the families of fallen Afghan Security Forces personnel that Ghani and his government have ignored them.

In many cases, the loss of a family member who is the main source of a family’s income, would effectively derail the household financial capacity, hence resulting in poverty.

According to United Nations reports, 5939 civilian causalities, including 2117 fatalities, have been reported in the between January and September this year, and is bound to rise exponentially this month after fighting erupted across the state after the Afghan Government and the Taliban failed to keep up the pace of peace talks after disagreements erupted with regard to the religious inclinations and the impact of the US-Taliban Agreement, although 18 of 20 articles of interest were agreed upon by the two parties.
