ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CWBN)_ The US Embassy in Pakistan offered its apologies to the Pakistani Government via Twitter, on Wednesday (12th Nov), after having retweeted a political statement made by a senior member of a local opposition party, Ahsan Iqbal, the previous day.

The Iqbal’s statement, which read, “We have one in Pakistan too. He will be shown the way out soon”, accompanied a screenshot of a Washington Post article, titled “Trump’s defeat is a blow for the world’s demagogues and dictators.”

In its apology, the embassy stated that its Twitter account used to retweet was accessed without authorization and that the embassy does not endorse the posting of political messages.

Minister of Human Rights, Shireen Mazari, alongside the Governor of Sindh were among the trending outcry on Twitter, which had demanded the US apology.

“[The] US Embassy must observe norms of diplomacy.” – Mazari

However, following the apology made by the US mission, Mazari noted that the Twitter account was “clearly not hacked” meaning that someone with a political agenda had access to the account and used it without authorization.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication also denounced the retweet and added that the government expects “some heads to roll”.
