NEW DELHI, India (CWBN)_ A written apology was submitted by social media giant Twitter to the Joint Committee of the Indian Parliament for incorrectly labelling Ladakh as part of China.
Chairperson of the Joint Committee of the Indian Parliament, Meenakshi Lekhi, confirmed on Wednesday that Twitter submitted an affidavit signed by Twitter Inc.’s Chief Privacy Officer, Damien Karien, in response to the panel’s criticism of Twitter for the error just days before.
“Twitter has now given us a written apology on an affidavit for Ladakh being shown in China. They have apologised for hurting Indian sentiments and have sworn to correct the error by November 30, 2020,” Lekhi stated.
The issue was initially highlighted by an Indian journalist who realized that their broadcast in Ladakh’s capital Leh was geo-tagged as being a part of China. The Joint Committee of Parliament on Data Protection Bill slammed Twitter last month for the error and demanded a formal apology, pointing out that the offense amounted to treason in India.
Ladakh has been a bone of contention between India and China, with both countries claiming that the region is rightfully theirs. Efforts are currently underway to reduce military presence in the area but progress is slow because of tensions between the two nations.
