GAUTENG, South Africa (CWBN)_  South African media reports that Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela led a walkabout in the streets of Tshwane on Thursday (December 17) as part of operation Okae Molao to remind citizens that law enforcement would be maintaining a watchful eye over the nation even during the holiday season. Police bosses and other law enforcement agencies are also reported to have joined to assess citizens’ compliance COVID-19 regulations.

South African media reports that the nation’s police describe operation Okae Molao as an integrated operation in which police target areas where they believe crime is problematic with the help of other law-enforcement agencies.

The South African Police Service has requested the general to public follow health and safety guidelines in order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic during the holiday season. “We are in the festive season in which many of us will travel to different destinations and some will be receiving visitors or loved ones during this period. As you enjoy and celebrate, always remember to be safe amid the corona virus pandemic and adhere to the Disaster Management Regulations,” they said.

WHO reports that the nation has seen 883 687 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 23 827 deaths. The nation enacted a strict COVID-19 lockdown earlier in the year, which even saw the closure of the nation’s airports which have since been reopened following severe economic fallout. The nation is reported to be one of the hardest hit by the pandemic in the African continent. As with other nations, observers fear that the holiday season will cause a fresh wave of infections in South Africa.
