Israel government collapse triggers election

Tel Aviv, Israel (CWBN)_ On the 22nd of December, Israel’s coalition government collapsed yet again after it failed to implement budgets for both 2020 and 2021, calling for a fourth round of national elections in two years.

It is expected that the election will be held by March 23rd next year and is likely to feature a candidate who may replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The coalition government propped up by Netanyahu and Defence Minister Benny Gantz, to avoid a fourth vote amid an impending third nationwide lockdown, reached a conclusion following months of internal paralysis and spiking unemployment rates.

A statement released by Gantz said that “Netanyahu is taking us to elections just so he doesn’t have to show up in court.”

The two will be contesting in the elections severely weakened, however, Gantz is reportedly pushing ahead. Following a bungled reopening of the economy after the government was elected in mid-May, support for Netanyahu sank significantly. Each week since late June, demonstrations against his leadership have attracted thousands across the region.

“Israel’s ongoing political crisis will continue as long as Netanyahu remains prime minister and a government cannot be formed without him,” President of the Israel Democracy Institute Research Center, Yohanan Plesner said.
