Maldives seeks for more ways to improve bilateral relations with Bangladesh

Male, Maldives (CU)_ The government of Maldives is planning to improve the bilateral relations with Bangladesh. The island is looking for more ways of collaborating with Bangladesh in certain fields such as trade and investment. During a meeting with President M Abdul Hamid in Bangabhaban this evening, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid revealed the intertest of his government to improve the current bilateral ties with Bangladesh.

On a three-day official visit to Bangladesh, FM Shahid informed the President about the Maldivian President’s upcoming visit to Bangladesh during the country’s Golden Jubilee Independence celebrations and Mujib Borsho, the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Foreign Minister of the Maldives believes that the current relations between the two countries will be enhanced if the President of the Maldives visit Bangladesh on the occasion of its special day.

President Hamid welcomed the FM and said that Bangladesh is a close and trusted friend of the Maldives and that Bangladesh focuses on improving relations with the Maldives. Moreover, in regional and international forums, Bangladesh and the Maldives support each other on different issues. The President noted that about 85,000 Bangladesh workers are employed in the Maldives, and that they are contributing a major share to the socio-economic growth of the two countries.

Abdul Hamid said that Bangladesh is prepared to send more skilled labor to the Maldives, adding that Bangladesh has a wide pool of skilled labor. The President highlighted that numerous Maldivian students in different fields, such as medicine and engineering, are pursuing their higher education in Bangladesh. He said, “There is an opportunity to provide higher education to more Maldivian students in Bangladesh”. On highlighting about the Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the visit between the two countries, the President confirmed that this will further improve the bilateral relations between the two countries in different areas, such as trade and investment, education and culture.
