Pressure on government to boost UK manufacturing

LONDON (CU)_The pledge to level up all regions of the United Kingdom was a highlight of the Conservative Party’s campaign leading up to the general election, as the Tories made noteworthy gains  in the former northern industrial heartlands. Therefore, the pressure is now mounting on the government to make good on its promises from MPs, regional leaders and industry experts. 

Last week, ahead of the Prime Minister’s speech, 65 MPs called on Whitehall to set up a national plan to boost UK manufacturing, an industry known for higher wages. The ministers issued this demand following a report published by campaigning think-tank Onward, which examined how a revival in manufacturing far from London could level up the UK economy.
