Apollo Hospitals opens upgraded bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy unit

New Delhi, India (CU)_ According to a statement from the hospital, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in Delhi has opened its revamped Centre for Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy in its facility, in collaboration with DATRI, a blood stem cell donors registry. The event was organized on World Marrow Donors’ Day, which is observed on the third Saturday of September around the world.

A bone marrow transplant is a medical operation that involves replacing damaged cells in the bone marrow with healthy ones. Patients with certain forms of blood diseases, like leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma, transfusion-dependent thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and other severe blood-related immune system disorders, undergo this treatment. According to the hospital officials, since patients with both the diseases are immunocompromised, the pandemic had a major influence on their on time treatment.
