(CU)_On Monday, the 14th of March, 54 countries from across the globe commemorate Commonwealth Day, honouring their shared values and rich diversity as members of the association. The event is celebrated by people from Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Europe and the Caribbean and Americas, with a range of activities, including flag raising ceremonies, cultural events and faith gatherings. This year’s celebration, held under the theme ‘Delivering a Common Future’, is taking place during a time of global uncertainty, amid a global pandemic and an international conflict which has turned out to be the biggest military mobilization in Europe since World War II.

Against this backdrop, Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland delivered a message of hope, and underlined the significance of solidarity within the Commonwealth amid global challenges. “In an uncertain world, with multilateralism under strain, the Commonwealth shines as a beacon of hope and promise, inspiring confidence in the benefits of international co-operation and collective action,” the British diplomat said. “We celebrate the diversity that enriches us, and the similarities that enable us to work to together. Our points of unity make the Commonwealth unique in our world. Drawing from the deep wells of our unique history, they enable us to face the challenges of the 21st Century with clarity, unity and purpose.”

In her message, the Secretary-General called on the member states of the Commonwealth to stand together in the face of multiple global challenges, including the pandemic, climate change, populism, violence and insecurity. “Today, we renew the values that bind us, enshrined in our charter, of democracy; peace; human rights; equality; tolerance, respect and understanding; stewardship; promotion of youth and protection of the vulnerable,” she said.

Meanwhile, Scotland will join 1500 international guests for the Commonwealth Service, a multicultural, multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey in London. The event, which will be attended by members of the British Royal family, diplomats and faith leaders, will feature performances and testimonies from throughout the Commonwealth.
