Dhaka, Bangladesh (CU)_ Peter Hass, ambassador of the United States to Bangladesh, stated that the United States honors a nation like Bangladesh that has overcome immense challenges as the United States had also emerged after a brutal battle of independence. He said, “This year, as we (US and Bangladesh) celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations with Bangladesh, we pay tribute to another nation (Bangladesh) that emerged after a bloody war of independence”.

During the US Independence Day celebrations at the American International School in Dhaka, the ambassador delivered his special speech. He said, “We look forward to what the future will bring to Bangladesh – and what Bangladesh will bring to the future”. According to the ambassador, the US Independence Day is a special occasion where Americans honor the sacrifices made by their legendary leaders to protect democracy.

Highlighting that the founding fathers of the United States planned to establish a more perfect union, the ambassador stated, “Neither of our nations (the United States and Bangladesh) is perfect.” Hass stated that Americans face this issue every day. He said, “That is a challenge that Americans face every day – with humility and confidence – as we address weaknesses to our democracy”. He added, “Independence Day in America is also a day of fun, a day for getting together with friends and family. A day for barbecues, parades, and fireworks”.

He expects that the bilateral ties with the United States will thrive in the future and would contribute significantly to the socioeconomic growth of the two nations. In addition to the relation between the two governments, the Law Minister emphasized the expanding people-to-people and business-to-business connections between the two nations.

According to him, the Bangladeshi diaspora in the United States serves as a vital link between the two countries, and the number of Bangladeshi students pursuing education in the United States is on the rise. The US ambassador stated that Independence Day is a day of red, white, and blue in the United States. He said, “It’s a day of pride, patriotism, and a day when we remember that our nation emerged after a bloody war of independence; a day when we honor the sacrifices made by veterans to keep our democracy safe.”
