Popular South Indian actor-director Pratap Pothen dies at 70!

Chennai, India (CU)_ Pratap Pothen, the popular South Indian actor and director, passed away in Chennai. The 70-year-old actor’s body was discovered in his residence. Apparently, he lives alone in Chennai. More information on his death is awaited. His most recent film appearance was in ‘CBI5 The Brain’, starring Mammootty, which hit the screens a couple of months ago.

In addition to appearing in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films in the 1980s, the multi-talented actor also established himself as a playwright, director, and producer. Pratap Pothen’s directorial debut was Tamil film Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai, which is a film about a mentally ill couple, which bagged the national award. He directed three Malayalam films, including Rithubhedam, Daisy, and Oru Yathramozhi, with Mohanlal and Sivaji Ganeshan in the leading roles.

His filmography includes around 100 films in multiple languages including Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu and Hindi. He made his acting debut in the 1978 film Aaravam, directed by Bharatan. Some of his best performances include Thakara, Chamaram, and 22 Female Kottayam. Pratap became popular in Tamil with films such as Moodupani (1980), Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), Nenjathai Killathe (1980), and Panneer Pushpangal (1981).

In 1985, Pratap and actress Raadhika tied the knot. However, their marital life was short-lived, and they divorced in 1986. In 1990, he married a senior corporate professional Amala Sathyanath. The couple are parents to a daughter named Keya, who was born in 1991. But the couple broke their 22-year marriage in 2012.

The actor was born on August 13, 1952, and his father Kolathinkal Pothan passed away when he was only 15. Following his schooling from Lawrence School, Lovedale in Ooty, he enrolled in Madras Christian College for his higher studies. He started his profession as a copywriter at an advertising firm in Mumbai. He also had an ad firm named ‘Green Apple’. His performances in Jeeva, Vettri Vizhaa, Seevalaperi Pandi, and Lucky Man are quite famous in Tamil cinema.
