LAGOS AFRICA – There was pandemonium in the Ijanikin area of Lagos earlier this week as hoodlums and rival gangs in the community attacked one another. Gang fights are common in these areas. But this fight caused considerable damage.
There was tension growing for a while and it finally bubbled over when one gang allegedly assaulted an Indigene a member of the rival gang. But the heartbreaking thing about this is that they destroyed everything around them like shop buildings and roads and even the public transport.
It was learnt that before this happened a few communities’ member has sent out SOS messages to the community governor of Lagos. He was asked to address the youth that are in these gangs. To advise them of the destruction they are causing.
This wasn’t the first time these youth gangs did this and made chaos in the heart of Lagos. A few weeks ago, they had blocked the same Ijanikin section of the road, protesting the death of an Okada rider in the area, who allegedly died at the hands of policemen.
The Lagos state police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin made a statement saying “There was trouble in the area but the road has been cleared and normalcy restored to the community. An investigation is ongoing and we are doing everything to maintain order in the state. Our interest is the protection of life and property.”
So, the question here would be why isn’t the Governor doing something about it. What steps can be taken to make some peace amongst these youngsters. It is suspected that maybe talk between the two could be conducted and a truce to be called.
