This is how Ontario’s new minimum wage compares to the rest of Canada

CANADA (Commonwealth Union)_On Saturday, the provincial minimum wage increased, but even though Ontarians received a rise, it still isn’t the highest rate in the nation. The general minimum wage in Ontario increased by 50 cents on October 1 to $15.50 per hour. The province states that the hourly rate will go up annually in October.

The minimum wage in Ontario is the fourth highest in Canada when compared to the rest of the nation. The highest minimum wage, $16 per hour, is without age restrictions in Nunavut.

In Ontario, students make $14.60 per hour, unless they work as homeworkers, in which case they make $17.05 per hour. British Columbia is third at $15.65 an hour, Yukon is second with $15.70 an hour. On April 1 and June 1, respectively, their hourly rates increased this year.

The minimum wage in the Northwest Territories is now $15.20 per hour, however it will likely be raised in September of the following year. It rose for the final time in 2021. Since May 1, 2022, the hourly wage in Quebec has been $14.25. The minimum wage in Prince Edward Island has been $13.70 per hour since April 1, 2022, and on January 1, 2023, it will rise by 80 cents to $14.50 per hour. The hourly pay in Alberta is $15, and it hasn’t changed since 2018.

On October 1st, several jurisdictions outside of Ontario saw salary increases. The minimum wage in Saskatchewan increased from $11.81 to $13 per hour. The current minimum wage in Manitoba is $13.50 per hour; on April 1 of 2023 and October 1 of 2023, respectively, it is anticipated to increase to $14.15 and $15 per hour.

Additionally on October 1, the minimum wage in New Brunswick increased by $1 to $13.75 per hour, in Nova Scotia it grew by 25 cents to $13.60 per hour, and in Newfoundland and Labrador it increased by 50 cents to $13.70 per hour.
