New technology can turn Carbon dioxide into a valuable chemical

Canada (Commonwealth Union) – The conversion of pollutants to materials or components of use is the most ideal solution in the present day, with a heavy focus on the environment together with an economic crisis with rising inflation.

A new technology created at the University of Waterloo may have a vital role in the war against climate change by economically converting harmful carbon dioxide into fuels and other essential chemicals for consumption. The system produces 10 times more carbon monoxide, which may be utilized to generate ethanol, methane and other desirable substances, as opposed to present small-scale technologies restricted to testing in laboratories. Every cell may be arranged to form reactors of any size, making the technology modifiable according to the budget that can be installed right on site for industries producing carbon dioxide.

“This is a critical bridge to connect carbon dioxide lab technology to industrial applications,” Dr. Zhongwei Chen, a chemical engineering professor at the University of Waterloo, said, adding that in its absence it is hard for materials-based technologies to go commercial since it is not economical.

The system consists of electrolyzers able to convert the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, formed by burning fossil fuels, into carbon monoxide with water and electricity. Electrolyzers produced by scientists contain new electrodes together with a new liquid-based electrolyte that is saturated with carbon dioxide and flowed via the devices for conversion into carbon monoxide with an electrochemical reaction.

The electrolyzers are basically 10-centimetre by 10-centimetre cells, much bigger than present devices, capable of being stacked and configured in reactors irrespective of size. The scientists imagine on-site reactors at coal-fired power plants and factories that can directly be fed carbon dioxide emissions, making it cost effective by eradicating requirements the initial needs to gather and collect carbon dioxide.

Many municipalities across the world have implemented similar programmes in waste disposal where trash is eliminated by converting it into fuel.
