Plane crash forces Philippine airport to shutdown

Share

(Commonwealth Union) – The Philippine airport has seen its fare share of crashes but this one that happened earlier this week has managed to keep the airport closed till about the end of this month. Whilst the plane somewhat crashed in to the airport, what happened was that the aircraft is only damaged and not completely wrecked. Which means that the aircraft can in some ways be salvaged.

It was a Korean Airways flight that took a hit when it overflew the Philippines airport runway by a few hundred yards and managed to get itself stuck in grassy area just beyond it. There were zero casualties and no harm done as the 162 passengers and 11 crew escaped the air craft using the emergency slides.

The airways stated that it was rainy weather even for their senior captains and the calculations they made whilst landing was not spot on. This mistake came with a heavy cost as the airport had to be closed until they could move the aircraft and Korean airways will have to now repair the craft in the Philippines itself.

The airport had to cancel more than a dozen flights to ensure that there were no more crashes since half the Korean craft was still on the runway. The runway was not usable which meant that the airport could not function. Both parties issued incident reports that this was because of the weather and no other reason.

Dozens of flights have been canceled and Mactan-Cebu International Airport, one of the country’s busiest, remained closed due to the stalled aircraft at the end of its lone usable runway. The Philippines airport hopes it could have the craft removed and have an up and running airport by the end of the week.
