(Commonwealth Union)_No monitor lizard species should be regarded as “puppy-dog tame” or handled as a typical domesticated pet. This article is a brief guide to which monitor lizard species are most suited for captive life and make the best “pets”. They are wild animals, and while if they have the capacity to become gentle and trusting, they are also capable of causing very serious harm.

A beginner’s pet should not be a monitor species. They are not intended for anyone looking for a large lizard merely to impress others. You should have some previous expertise with reptiles, especially large lizards. Even better would be to work with monitor species before investing in your own. Join forums, conduct as much research as you can from various sources, and pose inquiries. There is never too much preparation!

The Ace (Varanus acanthurus)

The Ackie is unquestionably the best species of monitor to own as a pet. By monitor standards, ackies are a small species, yet they have numerous benefits over the other monitors. As adults, they grow to a height of 2-3 feet and have both red and yellow colouring. The only significant distinction between reds and yellows is pricing. Although they are still uncommon in ordinary pet transactions, they are quickly gaining popularity. They require exceptional care and have wonderful temperaments.

Monitor Blackthroats (Ionides Monitors)

Blackthroats make good pets for monitor knowledgeable people despite being temperamentally superior than Ackies and despite being substantially larger. Blackthroats are not suitable for anyone with a small yard because they can grow to be 6 feet long. They can develop a strong bond with their owners and many of them are cherished pets. One of the easiest to care for and most docile monitor species is the blackthroat. Nevertheless, due to their size, they do deserve respect.
