MOZAMBIQUE (COMMONWWALTH UNION) – It seems that plans are not going to how they were supposed to when the Mozambique government decided to build a dam.
There was a planned dam which was Mphanda Nkuwe to be built in Mozambique. It seems that whiles the planning of the dam went to absolute perfection the building of it didn’t go as well as one wanted it to.
The building of this dam will definitely threaten the communities with Mozambique as it threatens the eco system the communities are built on. This does not look like great news at all. The green groups that have been fighting the construction of the dam confirmed firmly that if the dam is to be built then certain indigenous communities will suffer as their eco systems will be destroyed.
When looking at the numbers it was confirmed that close to 1400 families could be displaced as their homes could be lost. There were reports saying that none other than the building of this hydro powers dam would be the cause for this displacement.
Apart for this 1400 families down stream the dam would cause more havoc as 200,000 people would then be affected. When questioned if the damage could be reversed the grim answer was that the damage the dam would cause would be irreversible and the local ecosystems that would be ruined would never be able to repair themselves.
The group further posted on all websites that this would also damage the floodplains which would make the already bad floods even worse making the areas unlivable to almost anybody including animals.
The Mozambique government however is trying to find a resolution as the building of this dam would make winning the next election a walk in the park for them. They also have claimed that the construction of the dam would also help with the power crisis that the country is facing right now.
If the power crisis can be fixed that means the country will not go into further debt by borrowing money from other countries and international institutions to keep the lights on!
