Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – The South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) is a proposed project aimed at creating a cluster of heavy industries in South Wales, UK, that can work together to reduce carbon emissions and become a leader in low-carbon industrial processes. The project is part of the UK government’s Industrial Decarbonization Strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industry and promote the development of new, low-carbon technologies.
The project aims to leverage the existing infrastructure and expertise in the region, which has a history of heavy industry, to develop new low-carbon industries and technologies.
A Cluster Plan report was officially launched recently by the project holding expressing a firm view that if the policy drivers within its report are promptly conducted by stakeholders, south Wales industry may speed up the Welsh’ contribution to restricting global warming and assisting retain regional economic prosperity.
The report, which was the pinnacle of 26 months’ work by roughly 40 Welsh businesses, academia, that included the University of South Wales (USW) as well as public bodies, is entitled “South Wales Industry – A Plan for Clean Growth”.
The report consisted of 30 policy drivers where SWIC holds the view that is essential to decarbonize industry.
Dr Chris Williams, head of industrial decarbonization at Industry Wales, that led the SWIC since its establishment in 2019 says “This report sets out a step-by-step roadmap for the decarbonisation south Wales industry and the infrastructure required to achieve net zero. It could potentially unlock an unprecedented £30billion investment in south Wales, creating new industries, producing tens of thousands of jobs and securing thousands more.”
