Europe Cuts Road Deaths, but Cyprus Goes the Other Way: What Went Wrong?

NICOSIA, CYPRUS—28 OCTOBER 2026

What measures should countries take to enhance road safety, and what actions are necessary to prevent its deterioration? Cyprus experienced an unpleasant lesson some weeks ago when it learned that the situation became dangerous. In the year 2025, the number of people killed in road accidents increased by 10%, according to statistics released by the European Commission on the 27th of October, 2026.

According to the statistics, while many EU countries have managed to reduce fatalities on the roads, Cyprus does not seem to benefit from this trend and continues to face annual increases in road accidents.

Cyprus’s Numbers Too High

In 2025, there were about 45 road fatalities per million residents in Cyprus, which is slightly higher than the EU average of 43 per million. The increase in fatalities comes despite the fact that the numbers stay 12% below the average for the period from 2017 to 2019 and 13% below the 2019 figure.

The aforementioned information reveals the harsh reality of the number of lives that have been severed, families that have suffered devastating losses, and communities forced to face loss. This issue highlights the necessity of addressing the matter from the perspective of reducing and controlling road accidents.

Speeding and mobile-phone usage are two of the most important reasons that contribute to fatal car accidents, according to Cyprus Inform. It has also been discovered that drivers aged below 24 years account for a large number of crashes, which points to the importance of responsible driving, effective enforcement, and road safety education.

Motorcycles Are the Most Vulnerable Means of Transportation

The problem does not stop in 2026. In the current report on 2026, it has been noted that Cyprus has 34 road accidents, which share the same amount as the number registered in the same time period of 2025. Out of the 34 road accidents, 14 involved motorcycles, highlighting that these vehicles are the most dangerous on the road.

The broader context suggests both a good and bad scenario for Bulgaria, which records a staggering fatality rate of 71 deaths per million people, followed by Romania at 68 deaths per million and Croatia at 65 deaths per million. In contrast to that, Sweden recorded the lowest fatality rate of 19 deaths per million people.

The key question for Cyprus is whether the increase that the country faces in 2025 will be just a temporary setback or whether it will signify ongoing problems to be faced. This relies on a greater enforcement of the law, safer driving practices, and increased protection of road users.

The success of the road safety strategy is measured not by the speed of traffic but by the number of people who survive their travel.
