AFRICA ( Commonwealth Union) _ The Spanish warship ESPS “Audaz” arrived in Lagos, Nigeria to strengthen military ties between the two countries and promote defence diplomacy. The port visit, which took place on May 13, demonstrated Spain’s commitment to the security of the Gulf of Guinea. Lagos, being Nigeria’s most populous city and economic center, held particular significance. Nigeria is considered a pivotal country in Africa and an important partner for Spain in the region, as stated in the Spanish document “Foco África 2023.”
During the visit, various activities were conducted, including military cooperation, defence diplomacy, and logistical operations. The ESPS “Audaz” is currently deployed in the Gulf of Guinea as part of the European Union’s Coordinated Maritime Presence, contributing to maritime security in a strategically important area.
This marks the second significant visit of the ESPS Audaz to Lagos since its departure from Spain four months ago. The warship has travelled 18,000 nautical miles during this period. The port visit involved several military cooperation activities, including a piracy scenario operation with the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Squadron. Additionally, a Spanish delegation, led by the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, visited the Western Naval Command and the “Falcon Eye” project, further highlighting leadership in maritime security.
In order to enhance interoperability and strengthen bonds between the two navies, three Nigerian officers embarked on board the ESPS “Audaz” during its time at sea. These activities are vital for achieving a safe and secure maritime environment in collaboration with coastal states.
However, the presence of the ESPS “Audaz,” one of the most modern warships in the Spanish Navy, along with the visit of the Spanish Ambassador, underscores Spain’s commitment to Nigeria and reinforces Spanish diplomacy in contributing to peace and international security.
