Sports- EU (Common Wealth) _ The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen was won by the No. 25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 after the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 failed post-race technical inspection.
BMW wins its maiden race in the premier prototype division, becoming the fourth manufacturer to do so this season in the new GTP category. Cadillac had won at Sebring and Laguna Seca, while Porsche Penske Motorsport had won at Long Beach with the No. 6.
After rain washed out most of Qualifying, the race began under partly cloudy sky. In the morning Warm-Up session, the two BMW LMDH prototypes finished first and second.
“While we would have preferred to win on the track, this success is the result of long, hard work and the well-deserved reward for the fantastic performances of everyone involved in this program,” BMW M Motorsport Director Andreas Roos stated. Our pace was consistent all weekend, and we set the fastest times. We’ve been progressing from race to race, and we’ve now won our first GTP race. I am extremely proud of our entire team.
Porsche Penske Motorsport said in a statement that it was considering an appeal. Porsche Penske Motorsport intends to gather all data and adhere to the protest processes in due course.
In the morning Warm-Up session, the two BMW LMDH prototypes finished first and second.
Connor De Phillippi, driver of the No. 25 BMW, had led 21 laps and was cruising to victory when he lost the lead to Mathieu Jaminet, driver of the No. 6 Porsche, with 8 minutes remaining in the six-hour event – only a minute before a full-course red stopped the field for the last three laps.
DePhillippi won his sixth IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car Championship race, and co-driver Nick Yelloly won his first.
