This optical illusion created in 1975 by Shigeo Fukada features a row of legs and continues to be one of the popular optical illusions even today.  The image could be perceived in two different ways, revealing interesting communication skills about the viewers, who are asked how many legs they could see in the picture.

We are often deceived by visual perceptions.  For example, although the optical illusion we are talking about today appears to be a simple row of legs, upon closer inspection it becomes clear that here is more to it than what we see.  We know for a fact today that our environment plays an important role in shaping our perception.  Thus, artists and designers taking advantage of this fact create artificial environments where our visual perceptions are deceived.

The Instagram page ‘Optical Illusions’ has shared this puzzle and intrigues its Instagram users by captioning it – How many legs are in this picture?  This image could be perceived in two ways.  Each view holds a place in the mind of the viewer, revealing interesting facts about their communication skills.

Viewers who see the man’s legs first are direct speakers, who speak without a moment’s hesitation according an entertainment website called YourTango.  Those who on the other hand saw a woman’s leg first are communicators who think before they speak, and struggle to find the exact words to express themselves.

There is also a third set of viewers who were able to simultaneously see both the man’s and the woman’s legs, and these are people who tend to be direct communicators, and have a knack for speaking out their minds without much planning.

The question is – how many legs did you see in the picture?

Don’t worry.  If you could not figure out the number, we are going to reveal the answers:  There are a total of 11 legs of man and 11 of women in this picture.  Thus there are 2 legs in the picture.   Were you able to find the total number of legs in the picture or did you struggle?
