India (Commonwealth)_We are excited to share with you some of the interesting suggestions and feedback we have received regarding the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in higher education in Gujarat. The Gujarat Education Department has been actively seeking input from various stakeholders, including teaching staff from colleges and universities across the state, to shape the ‘Choice Based Credit Framework’ for the upcoming academic session of 2023-24.
Among the suggestions received, there have been calls for the inclusion of pranayama in all undergraduate courses, mandatory teaching of Sanskrit and regional languages, and the option for students to take courses on Braille and sign languages. These ideas reflect the importance of holistic development and inclusivity in our educational system, catering to the diverse needs of our students.
One college teacher expressed concern about the possible relegation of subjects like General English and Commercial Communication, emphasizing their significance for students’ employability in the global market. On the other hand, another viewpoint advocated for the inclusion of Indian languages alongside English in the curriculum. These contrasting perspectives offer valuable insights into the ongoing discussions about course offerings.
We want you to know that your opinions matter to us, and we are working diligently to finalize the ‘Choice Based Credit Framework’ for the upcoming academic session. We are also developing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which will be applicable to all educational institutes. As part of this process, we will take into consideration students’ preferences and the nature of new courses or subjects. We also recognize the need for awareness about NEP 2020 among teachers, parents, and students, and efforts will be made to address this suggestion.
The proposed curriculum and credit framework will apply to undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines. We are carefully reviewing all suggestions, including the reduction of the percentage requirement for research work and dissertations to accommodate students’ circumstances.
Additionally, the received recommendations to develop a credit framework tailored to the needs of hearing-impaired students, as well as offering Braille and sign language courses as options for all students considered important. These suggestions highlight the importance of inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all learners.
Lastly, we want to assure you that we understand the concerns raised regarding the appointment of regular principals and teaching/non-teaching staff in grant-in-aid colleges. We recognize the significance of a stable administrative and academic environment and are committed to addressing these issues promptly.
The active participation and valuable suggestions are welcomed, which will contribute to the development of an inclusive, comprehensive, and responsive education system. Together, creating an environment that fosters growth, embraces diversity, and prepares our students for the challenges and opportunities of the future would be the aim of the NEP.
