South Africa (Common Wealth) _ South Africa has been confronted with a troubling truth, as figures show that the country registered 207 child weddings in a year, with a whopping 188 minors taken as brides. These chilling data throw a focus on the serious problem of child marriages that continues to afflict the country, raising concerns about the welfare and protection of children’s rights.
Dr. Seble Worku, Director of Education and Child Statistics at Statistics South Africa, revealed the shocking findings, throwing light on the grave situation. There were 19 minor grooms and 188 underage brides among the 207 documented child weddings. Furthermore, the data showed that 37 of these unions were registered. Furthermore, 37 of these unions were registered as civil weddings, while 19 were done under customary law, according to the data.
Despite efforts to eliminate socioeconomic inequities, the national Department of Social Development reported that over 2.6 million minors continue to live in low-income households. This condition is contrasted with the four million children who live in high-income households, highlighting the country’s economic disparities. Pensions and grants continue to be a substantial source of income for children in rural regions, highlighting South Africa’s complicated concerns of poverty and inequality.
Takam Kembo, the African Union Commission’s Special Rapporteur and Social and Health Envoy, paid a monitoring visit to South Africa as part of a mission to oppose child marriages and detrimental cultural practices. High-level consultations with various government departments and stakeholders are intended to identify progress, issues, and best practices. The visit also coincides with the 4th African Girls Summit, which will focus on a continental campaign to abolish harmful behaviors in November.
The mission’s goal is to learn about the systems in place in South Africa to protect children, especially the efficacy of the country’s child protection system. The Special Rapporteur will assess policies and efforts to combat various types of child violence, such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, and internet exploitation. This thorough review will result in a full progress report with observations and recommendations, casting light on areas that need to be addressed.
The fight against child marriages is an urgent and essential priority as South Africa works to protect its children and create a safer environment for their growth and development.
