Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has offered guidance on methods to involve second and third-generation Nigerians in the Diaspora in efforts aimed at advancing the development and prosperity of Nigeria. Her advice underscores the potential of leveraging the skills, resources, and global perspectives of these diaspora members to contribute meaningfully to the country’s progress. This approach aligns with the broader goal of fostering collaboration and engagement between the Nigerian diaspora and the homeland for mutual benefit and sustainable growth.

This counsel was offered during a presentation by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in recognition of Okonjo-Iweala as a “Diaspora Icon.” The presentation took place in Abuja and was led by Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that the Nigerian Diaspora has the potential to contribute significantly to the country beyond remittances, including skills and knowledge transfer. She highlighted the importance of leveraging the expertise of the Diaspora, particularly in the context of the global shift towards technology and the digital age.

Expressing her gratitude for the recognition, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala expressed pride in her Nigerian heritage and her elation at being honored as a “Diaspora Icon.” She lauded the work of NiDCOM in engaging the Diaspora and pledged her support to collaborate with the Commission and the Nigerian government for the betterment of all citizens.

During the award presentation, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s selfless service to Nigeria and humanity, highlighting her role as an inspiration to Nigerian women who aim to achieve a balance between family responsibilities and career advancement. The Diaspora Icon Award is a significant category within the National Diaspora Day celebrations and National Diaspora Merit Award, which were held on July 26, 2023. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s recognition underscores the potential for collaboration between the Nigerian government and its diaspora community to foster development and progress.
