UK AI Week in Bangkok highlights…

Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – From August 15th to 18th, the British Embassy in Bangkok orchestrated a comprehensive agenda focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), encompassing policy, business, and public diplomacy. The goal was to underscore the United Kingdom’s role as a frontrunner in global technological innovation and AI leadership, while concurrently fostering a stronger connection with the region through this pivotal technology.

The United Kingdom is an advocate for global technological advancements and stands as a preeminent authority in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Acknowledging the transformative potential of AI and in alignment with the UK’s International Technology Strategy, the British Embassy initiated its inaugural UK AI Week in Bangkok. This dynamic event unfolded over four days, spanning from August 15th to 18th, 2023. The program was designed to showcase the UK’s AI capabilities, furnish a platform for bilateral discussions between the two nations concerning AI governance and applications spanning diverse sectors. Ultimately, the weeklong initiative furthered the augmentation of the burgeoning relationship between the UK and Thailand.

Commencing the week was a high-level policy roundtable, convening key stakeholders from both the United Kingdom and Thailand. Noteworthy participants from the UK included experts from distinguished institutions such as the Alan Turing Institute, The Institute of Analytics, Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. Engaging in insightful conversations, these experts and policymakers delved into a spectrum of topics encompassing regulatory frameworks, governance models, investment dynamics, incentivization strategies, the prospective impact of AI across various sectors, and the ethical utilization of AI as a positive force.

In the evening, a reception unfolded at the Ambassador’s residence, hosted by the Embassy. The gathering welcomed British AI experts and business representatives, alongside Thai government officials and representatives from international organizations, including UNESCO.

Natalie Black, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific delivered an opening remark says “With over 160 unicorns and a tech sector worth $1 trillion, the UK looks forward to offering our expertise and partnership in developing AI for good. I am excited to see deepening tech collaborations between our two countries.”
