Let’s face it, we’ve had our ups and downs in dealing with cyberspace. Authoritarian regimes and criminals seem to have been quicker in adapting to technological advancements. But it’s never too late to turn the tide.
Back in 1972, when email was just getting started, the US Air Force pointed out the importance of recognizing malicious threats and embedding security into our systems. It’s taken a while, but here we are.
Now, almost everything in our lives is connected digitally, from everyday items to high-tech defense gear. As technology advances, so do the risks. We need a strategy that speaks plainly about these threats and emphasizes the need for investing in security. Trust us, a light touch on security won’t stifle innovation. It’ll actually create a safer environment where we can thrive.
We shouldn’t be asking what freedoms we have to sacrifice for security. Instead, let’s ask what security we need for online freedom. It’s about striking the right balance.
Communication is key. While we’re working on mending ties with China, let’s be honest about the primary state threat in cyberspace. New Zealand has done it, and we can too.
