Consequences of partnership between Air France-KLM Group and Etihad Airways

Aviation and airlines ( commonwealth union ) _ Air France-KLM Group and Etihad Airways have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding their collaboration in various aspects of their operations. This partnership is set to encompass passenger services, loyalty programs, talent development, and maintenance services, with the potential to bring substantial benefits to both airlines and their customers.

One of the key objectives of this agreement is to build upon their existing codeshare and interline agreements that were originally established in 2012, pending regulatory approvals. To kick off this expanded collaboration, they have introduced over 40 new routes across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Australia for travelers to book, with the first flights available as early as the winter season of 2023.

Additionally, this MoU proposes greater cooperation between the loyalty programs of both airlines, Flying Blue and Etihad Guest, allowing their frequent flyers to earn and redeem miles with Air France, KLM, and Etihad. Beyond this, the airlines are exploring initiatives such as terminal co-location, reciprocal lounge access, and ground handling arrangements to enhance the overall travel experience.

Etihad Airways currently operates daily flights connecting Abu Dhabi with Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol. In a significant development, Air France will commence daily flights between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Abu Dhabi International Airport from October 29, 2023.

Angus Clarke, the Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Air France-KLM Group, emphasized the expansion of this 11-year collaboration, highlighting the opportunities in maintenance and loyalty programs. He also acknowledged the appeal of Abu Dhabi as a destination and hub, thanks to Etihad’s extensive network spanning South and South-east Asia, as well as Australia.

Arik De, Chief Revenue Officer at Etihad Airways, expressed the importance of this MoU in enhancing connectivity between Abu Dhabi and Paris, leveraging the extensive AF-KL network to serve Europe and beyond. He emphasized Etihad’s commitment to contributing to Abu Dhabi’s cultural and economic growth while providing enhanced travel benefits and customer experiences to their guests.
